Trial of the Koi | Kintarō
Kintaro, also known as the Golden Boy, is one of the most beloved figures in Japanese folklore. According to legend, he was a child of extraordinary strength who grew up in the mountains, where he became known for his fearless nature and his close connection with animals.
Often depicted wearing his iconic apron, Kintaro represents strength, courage, and the simple spirit of a child connected to nature.
I have always been fascinated by the story of Kintaro and the imagery surrounding his legend. There is something unique about a character who possesses incredible strength while still carrying the innocence and curiosity of a child, and I wanted to capture that contrast in this artwork.
In this piece, Kintaro is shown wrestling with a giant koi fish, inspired by the traditional stories of his encounters with animals. The scene focuses on the playful challenge between them, with Kintaro’s determination facing the power and movement of the koi.
The composition, details, and traditional Japanese elements are inspired by the visual language of ukiyo-e, while keeping my own interpretation of this iconic figure and the stories that continue to inspire Japanese art.
